We’ve been meeting some incredible people lately—ambitious, energetic, and eager to get their foot in the door. But one thing we’ve noticed? Many of them are missing out on opportunities simply because they’re not sure how to show up well on Zoom.
At Level Up Events, we’re growing faster than ever and constantly on the lookout for driven individuals to join our team. The first step in our interview process is a short Zoom call—just 15 to 20 minutes—but that brief conversation can make or break a candidate’s chances. And too often, we see people who could be a great fit stumble at the first hurdle.
Not because they lack potential. But because no one taught them how to treat a Zoom interview like the real deal.
We believe in supporting the next generation of talent—so we wrote this blog to help. Whether you’re just starting out or haven’t interviewed in a while, this guide walks you through how to make a professional first impression, even from your bedroom.
How to Prepare Well for a Zoom Interview
So, you’ve landed a Zoom interview with Level Up Events—nice work! That means your application stood out, and now it’s time to show who you are beyond the résumé.
At Level Up Events, we don’t just look for experience—we look for energy, drive, and people who are eager to learn and grow. Our team is competitive, fast-paced, and passionate about creating real human connections. That starts with your very first one: the interview.
Here’s how to prepare and present yourself like a pro in your first-stage Zoom interview (which only takes 15–20 minutes, by the way—you’ve got this).
1. Dress the Part
Just because it’s on Zoom doesn’t mean you can rock up in your hoodie. First impressions matter, and how you show up visually says a lot about your mindset.
- Wear something smart-casual—a collared shirt, neat top, or blazer is perfect.
- Keep it clean and simple—avoid loud prints or distracting accessories.
- Think “office-ready” even if you’re taking the call from your bedroom.
You don’t need to wear a full suit, but you do need to show that you’re taking the opportunity seriously.
2. Nail Your Setup
You don’t need fancy equipment, but a clean, professional setup goes a long way.
- Camera at eye level – No one wants to stare up your nose or look down on you. Stack some books under your laptop if needed.
- Good lighting – Sit facing a window or use a lamp. Avoid having bright light behind you.
- Eliminate distractions – Find a quiet space, turn off notifications, and ask housemates to give you privacy for 20 minutes.
- Tidy background – A blank wall or neat room is best. If in doubt, use a neutral Zoom background.
3. Tell Your Story with Confidence
Level Up isn’t just looking for polished professionals. They’re looking for people with potential—young, ambitious individuals who are hungry to learn and love a challenge.
So even if you don’t have loads of experience, talk about:
- Times you stepped up as a leader
- Times you worked hard and showed resilience
- What you’ve learned from part-time jobs, sports, or team activities
- Why you’re excited about growth and progression
Your energy, mindset, and attitude matter more than a long list of past jobs.
Then, prepare one or two thoughtful questions to ask at the end of the interview. This shows you’re interested and engaged—not just going through the motions.
4. Master the Basics of Zoom Etiquette
This one’s simple, but often overlooked.
- Test your Wi-Fi beforehand
- Use headphones to reduce echo and improve sound
- Greet your interviewer with a smile and a wave
- Let them lead the call—but don’t be afraid to show personality
Also: use names, make eye contact by looking at the camera, and don’t interrupt (even if you’re excited!).
5. Follow Up
After the interview, send a short thank-you message. It can be as simple as:
“Thanks so much for taking the time to speak with me today. I really enjoyed learning more about Level Up Events, and I’m excited about the opportunity to be part of your team.”
This small step shows maturity, professionalism, and appreciation. All green flags.
Your first Zoom interview is your chance to stand out—not just on paper, but as a person. Show up ready. Show up prepared. And most of all, show up as you—ambitious, curious, and ready to Level Up.
Good luck—you’ve got this.
